How to approach this question
Choose two points from the bulleted list in Source C (e.g., press freedom, minority rights). For each point, first state what the source says about the situation in Brazil. Then, explain how this is different from the way democracy is supposed to work in the UK. Use comparative words like 'in contrast', 'whereas', or 'however'.
Full Answer
This question asks you to use the source as a stimulus to compare democratic principles. The source describes actions in Brazil that undermine democracy. You need to contrast these with the democratic ideals and practices in the UK. For example, 'intimidating journalists' in Brazil is the opposite of 'freedom of the press' in the UK. 'Persecuting minority groups' is the opposite of 'protecting minority rights' through legislation like the Equality Act. The key is to make a direct and explicit comparison between the two countries for each point you make.
Common mistakes
Only describing the situation in Brazil from the source, without making the comparison to the UK. Or, describing features of UK democracy without linking them back to the points raised in the source about Brazil.
