AQA GCSE · Question 02.7 · Forces
Explain what happens to gear B when the child applies the force to gear A.
Explain what happens to gear B when the child applies the force to gear A.
How to approach this question
1. Determine the direction of rotation for gear A based on where the force is applied.
2. Consider how the teeth of two interlocking gears interact.
3. Based on this interaction, determine the direction of rotation for gear B.
Full Answer
When the child applies the force to gear A, it creates a moment that causes gear A to rotate. Based on the diagram, this rotation will be clockwise.
The teeth on the edge of gear A mesh with the teeth on gear B. As gear A rotates clockwise, its teeth push down on the teeth of gear B. This push causes gear B to rotate in the opposite direction, which is anti-clockwise. This is a fundamental property of a simple gear train.
Common mistakes
✗ Only stating that gear B moves or turns, without specifying the direction.\n✗ Stating that gear B rotates in the same direction as gear A.\n✗ Not explaining that the teeth of the gears cause the motion to be transferred.
