    AQA GCSE · Question 03.1 · Number

Write 3/2 as a mixed number.

    How to approach this question

To convert an improper fraction to a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator. 1. Divide 3 by 2. 2. 3 ÷ 2 = 1 with a remainder of 1. 3. The quotient (1) becomes the whole number part. 4. The remainder (1) becomes the new numerator. 5. The denominator (2) stays the same. So, 3/2 = 1 1/2.

    Full Answer

An improper fraction is a fraction where the numerator (the top number) is greater than or equal to the denominator (the bottom number). A mixed number is a whole number and a proper fraction combined. To convert 3/2 to a mixed number, we see how many whole times 2 fits into 3. 2 goes into 3 one time (1 × 2 = 2). There is a remainder of 3 - 2 = 1. This remainder is placed over the original denominator. So, we have 1 whole and a remainder of 1/2. The mixed number is 1 1/2.

    Common mistakes

✗ Writing 1.5 is the decimal equivalent, not a mixed number.\n✗ Writing 1 remainder 1 is not the correct format for a mixed number.
