    AQA GCSE · Question 02.9 · Organisation

There are different treatments for a blockage in a coronary artery. Explain how one treatment for a blockage in a coronary artery works.

    How to approach this question

Choose one treatment you have learned about for coronary heart disease (e.g., stents, statins, bypass surgery). Describe the treatment and then explain its mechanism of action – what does it physically or chemically do to solve the problem of the blockage?

    Full Answer

There are several treatments for blocked coronary arteries: * **Stents:** A stent is a small, metal mesh tube. It is guided to the blocked artery on the end of a catheter with a balloon. The balloon is inflated, which expands the stent and pushes it against the artery wall. The stent is left in place to hold the artery open, restoring blood flow. * **Statins:** These are drugs that are taken orally. They work by reducing the level of LDL ('bad') cholesterol in the blood. High cholesterol is a major cause of the fatty deposits (atheromas) that block arteries, so by lowering cholesterol, statins slow down the rate at which these blockages form and can help to stabilise existing ones. * **Coronary Bypass Surgery:** This is a major operation where a blood vessel is taken from another part of the patient's body (like the chest or leg) and grafted onto the coronary artery to bypass the blocked section. This creates a new route for blood to flow to the heart muscle.

    Common mistakes

✗ Confusing the different treatments, e.g., saying a stent is a drug. ✗ Vague explanations like "it fixes the heart" or "it unblocks the artery" without explaining how.
